| Day Visit to Gainsborough House and Sudbury |
HOLD THE DATE VISIT GAINSBOROUGH HOUSE AND SUDBURY We have arranged a visit to Gainsborough House in Sudbury. There will be coffee or tea on arrival followed by a guided tour of the whole site in split groups. Gainsborough House reopened in November 2022 after a major capital development. This included a new three-storey exhibition wing where three interesting exhibitions are taking place. These are: The Image of the Artist – portraits from the Royal Academy; Picture Perfect – a century of fashion photography from the National Portrait Gallery and John MacFarlane and the art of theatrical design. There will be an optional extra Blue Badge guided tour of Sudbury’s streets describing the town’s weaving past in wool and silk. Flyers will be available at lecture meetings in February and March and will be circulated via Mailchimp in due course. |

| Dulwich Picture Gallery, Berthe Morisot Exhibition: Shaping Impressionism |
Guided tour of the permanent collection and entry to the first major exhibition in UK since 1950 of the paintings of the impressionist Berthe Morisot. In the first major exhibition of Berthe Morisot’s work to be shown in the UK since 1950, thirty masterpieces from international collections reveal the artist as a trailblazer of the Impressionist Movement. She was known for her swiftly painted glimpses of contemporary life and intimate domestic scenes. She featured prominently in the Impressionist exhibitions, defying social norms to become one of the movement’s most influential figures. The exhibition also features artwork by greats such as Reynolds, Gainsborough and Fragonard, tracing the roots of Morisot’s inspiration. After refreshments on arrival (not included), we have timed entry to the Morisot Exhibition in the morning, which will be on a self-guided basis, enabling you to enjoy the paintings at your leisure. Then in the afternoon we have a guided tour of the Gallery’s Permanent Collection which includes over 600 works rich in European masterpieces. Our tickets allow us to revisit the Permanent Collection at the end of the guided tour. Lunch is not included in the price but there are various options: Flotsam & Jetsam Restaurant at The Gallery (no reservations accepted). Picnic on a bench in the 3 acres of gardens where there are many interesting trees, including a mulberry tree. Today, it bursts with antiques at Camden Market, shi-shi eating places in the High Street, Victorian pubs, old picture palaces, the former Collins musical hall plus the “hanging gardens of Islington”. It is also famous for its celebrities past and present. Something for everyone….! Andrew will allow time for refreshments and lunch (not included). | Day Visit to the Cambridgeshire Fenns with Andrew Allan |
THURSDAY MARCH 10th 2022 DEPART 8 am from Rushmere Church car park. Approx cost £25 excluding entrance fees NOW FULLY BOOKED Andrew Allen (who you will remember was our excellent guide around Kings Lynn and Great Yarmouth) has kindly offered to take us on a tour around the Fens. We will visit Walpole St Peter church which has been claimed to be the finest parish church in the country and is often referred to as the cathedral of the Fens. A tour of Wisbech and a guided tour of NT Peckover House will be our next port of call. The coach will then take us to March to visit St Wendreda’s church featuring the finest carved angels and double hammer beamed roof and a walking tour of Georgian March. There will be an opportunity to either have your own picnic lunch or to choose a small eating venue in March. The coach company completely sanitise the coach prior to use and provide hand sanitiser. It is up to us to advise on other Covid precautions. We therefore request: - Proof of COVID vaccinations
- A negative lateral flow test the day before travel
- Wearing a face mask whilst traveling on the coach

Covid - 19 Sadly this trip has been cancelled. We will start our visit with a private guide round the Fry Art Gallery where we will also have coffee and biscuits. There are numerous small eating places for lunch, at our own expense, or you may like to bring a picnic! The Bridge Gardens, next to the Gallery would be a perfect spot. The gardens were created in 1840 and have been restored to Grade II listed by English Heritage. After lunch we will be met by our Blue Badge Guide who will take us on a walking tour of the ancient town which was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. By the early 1500’s Saffron Walden was the centre of the saffron industry in this country which is reflected in the wealth of timber framed buildings and the largest church in Essex. Visit to Kings Lynn on Monday March 9th 2020 Following the success of our Spring trip to the historic sites of Norfolk with Andrew Allan, Andrew has agreed to take us on guided a tour of Kings Lynn. The visit will include: - St Margaret's Church was given the status of Minster by the Bishop of Norwich in 2011. It is one of Britain's finest church facades with a delightful interior, highly rated by Simon Jenkins in his celebrated guide.
- Story of Lynn Museum and Exhibition: including the famous 14th century King John Cup.
- Hanseatic Warehouse: Medieval building, the only surviving one in the country.
- A short walking tour will include the Customs House and George Vancouver statue as well some attractive and interesting historic buildings in the town.
- A coach ride will give us views of the town across the river from the West.

· We are very fortunate to have the expertise of Andrew Allen, an East Anglian art historian who lives in East Norfolk and is passionate about its historic sites. · After meeting Andrew, we will proceed to Ranworth Church, famous for its painted medieval rood screen and set in a delightful location. · From there we will visit Yarmouth Minster, where Andrew will give us a guided tour and short talk. The Minster is the largest parish church in the country and being founded in II0I is the oldest building in the town. · Lunch (included) will be at the Grade II listed ‘Star Hotel’ on Yarmouth’s historic quayside. · After a leisurely lunch we visit the ‘Time and Tide Museum’ which tells the story of Great Yarmouth and its herring industry. · The afternoon culminates in a tour of some of the most important historic sites in the town and the quayside, described by Daniel Defoe as “the finest quay in England, if not Europe.” · Time and weather permitting we might be able to include a brief visit to Burgh Castle Roman fort. Many generations of the Lytton family have contributed to making Knebworth an extraordinary walk through 500 years of British history. Our visit is on a day when the house is closed to the general public so we will have a private guided tour of the house. This exhibition marks the centenary of the Russian Revolution and contrasts Russian art and life before and after the Revolution. www.thegibberdgarden.co.uk The Gibberd garden is Grade 2 listed, and was created and designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd, architect and master planner of Harlow New Town, 70 years ago. “Garden design is an art of space, like architecture and town design” We will begin our visit at the Gibberd Gallery with an introduction and refreshments; followed by a walking tour to see sculptures in the Water Gardens; then by coach to see some of the 80 sculptures around Harlow which include works by Hepworth, Frink and Moore; and finally to the Gibberd Gardens for lunch, a talk and time to enjoy the beautiful gardens. |
