Visit to Saffron Walden, Fry Art Gallery & Guided Walk
Tuesday 07 July 2020

We will start our visit with a private guide round the Fry Art Gallery where we will also have coffee and biscuits.

There are numerous small eating places for lunch, at our own expense, or you may like to bring a picnic! The Bridge Gardens, next to the Gallery would be a perfect spot. The gardens were created in 1840 and have been restored to Grade II listed by English Heritage.

After lunch we will be met by our Blue Badge Guide who will take us on a walking tour of the ancient town which was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. By the early 1500’s Saffron Walden was the centre of the saffron industry in this country which is reflected in the wealth of timber framed buildings and the largest church in Essex. To this day there are still over 300 such buildings of which 5 are Grade 1 listed.
